This group of youngsters are all now coming up 40.

It’s class 4 from Outlane Infants School in 1979 and was given to the Examiner by Gillian Boothroyd, mum of pupil Ian Boothroyd.

She said: “I remember the teacher, Mrs Darlington, well – a lovely lady.

“Shortly after Ian was born the three day week began.”

The Heath Government imposed the short working week to conserve coal stocks during a long-running dispute with the National Union of Mineworkers. From January 1 until March 1974 commercial users of electricity were limited to three specified consecutive days’ consumption each week and prohibited from working longer hours on those days.

Ian is a civil engineer living in Chester who has worked for Welsh Water for the last 15 years. He will be 40 on Christmas Eve.

He is married to Corinne and the couple have a baby called Olly.
