Imagine the Premiership footballers of today doing this.

The year is 1961 and the place is Alandale Road in Bradley.

Kevin Barker remembers some great times playing in the street, none more so that when Huddersfield Town star Ray Wilson stopped to play cricket with them.

Ray, of course, went on to win the World Cup with England five years later.

The photo shows Ray Wilson on the left with braces dangling down, Kevin Barker, Victor Krauklas, Tony McAllister, Derek Lodge, Barry Barker and Steve Howarth batting.

Kevin said: “My mother Pat used to work in town centre pubs including The Shoehorn Bar around this time and she and my dad got to know a few of the town players, including Denis Law who also used to come to the house.

“He even came after signing for Manchester City and I remember mum saying Denis is coming tonight, I will wake you up when he comes. Sure enough, I remember getting woken up and Denis being at my bedside saying “always wear number 8.” What a thrill for a young boy my age.”

Kevin added: “The police were always coming to see my mum in those days after neighbours complained of us playing football and cricket in the street to which she used to say ‘well, where are they supposed to play?’ There was spare rough ground which was dangerous to play on to which they were sympathetic.

“Bradley playing fields then got built quite a few years later.”

The team photos are of the Alandale Road footballers.
