A former Huddersfield man is anxious to get hold of photos of a long lost hamlet.

The hamlet was called Hill Top and Matthew Singleton says it was an area now covered by housing leading from Coniston Avenue in Dalton to the rear of houses along Alma drive – also off Coniston Avenue – at the Dalton/Moldgreen border.

Matthew, who now lives in Bolton, said: “The area came to mind a few weeks ago as I was passing the area and I recalled the cluster of ancient houses – a row of cottages and a more substantial grouping at right angles which looked as though it may have been a manor house gabled at the front on either side. It was H-shaped in plan and probably divided into three cottages at a later date.

“This was a haunt of mine as a young child, playing in old empty houses. The last family moved out in about 1974 and even then I loved old buildings and recall thinking what a tragedy the loss of these buildings was. Out of curiosity I trawled the internet for any images of this area and couldn’t find anything.

“Incidentally, Hill Top Road still exists, leading up the side of what was the Jolly Sailor pub in Moldgreen.”
