ORGANISERS of the Manchester athletics event in which Great Britain Olympic gold medal hopeful Jessica Ennis was robbed of a personal best in the 100 metres hurdles have been very quick to apologise.

They barely even attempted to duck the issue and admitted to the failure of bungling race officials to put up the correct number of barriers and went on to admit their embarrassment at the blunder and have taken responsibility for it.

But you can’t help but feel that behind the scenes there could have been much scratching of heads among the aforementioned ‘blundering race officials’ with people milling around saying things like “Well I counted them when they arrived” and “I know they were there five minutes ago”.

It is surprising that no one seemed to have bothered to get on the internet and check on eBay as to whether eight international quality hurdles were being offered for £50 from a Hulme estate address and go and buy them back.
