THE hopes of a home winner at Silverstone on Sunday would appear to be slim – and that comes direct from the horses mouths.

While it is hardly a desperate situation, Lewis Hamilton having provided a home winner of the British Grand Prix as recently as 2008, it is strange that the Mercedes man and former teammate Jenson Button for once go to the track in Northamptonshire most distinctly out of the reckoning for a win.

McLaren driver Button has tried to keep it upbeat for British fans by being as positive as possible, but the telling comment he made earlier in the week was: “We’re not going to get the result I’m sure all Brits want – and we want – but we’ll do the best we can.”

Hamilton has been having a happier run with his new team this season, but that is tempered by the fact his teammate Nico Rosberg has taken a chequered flag in this campaign while Lewis’ best has been third on three occasions.

Tyre wear has posed a problem for him this season and he summed up his Silverstone chances by saying: “We’ve made progress, but I don’t think we’ve cured it, so Silverstone will be a real challenge for us – we will have to see.”

Maybe we should look to Force India’s Paul Di Resta and Marussia’s Max Chilton – it would be fantastic if one of those two won!
