Built in about 1820 to replace a former farmhouse, this imposing double-fronted Georgian detached house was ‘a dream home to fill with children’ for the Farmiloe family.

Paul and Helen Farmiloe, who have spent 25 years at the property, Holmleigh, say they have left their mark on the house and it’s now time to move on.

Helen said: “Our dream was to fill this wonderful family house with children and that’s exactly what we did, having had five children who are now grown up and ready to leave.

“It’s now time for some new owners to put their stamp on the property. At the moment we are still undecided on our next move. It has been a huge privilege to live here. This house even has its own well so we even have our own spring water.’’

Originally a farmhouse stood on the site of Holmleigh in Church Street, Netherthong.

In 1780 Holmleigh Cottage, a three-storey property, was built at the side of the farmhouse and still stands today, being sold along with the main house.

Holmleigh was built before New Road, which now leads down into Holmfirth from Netherthong. When the road was built in 1860, it separated Holmleigh from Netherthong churchyard. The house, regarded initially as a manor house, was built by Abraham Woodhead, a member of the high-profile Woodhead family.

For the sale of the property the house has been staged by Clair Paxman, who runs I Love Your House, which specialises in preparing properties for sale.

She said: “Holmleigh is a fabulous house and must be one of the most imposing houses in the area, as well as one of the oldest in Netherthong.

“It has many original features including ornate mouldings, ceiling roses, original fireplaces, an old range and a stone-flag floor in the kitchen, a beautiful feature arch window and original staircase.

“There is also some original Cath Kidston wallpaper in the bathroom and a bedroom, as well as original bathroom tiles. Although the house is on the edge of Netherthong village, it is still very private and has long-distance views.’’

On the ground-floor the house has an imposing entrance hall with original tiled floor. Off this is a sitting room with views, a formal dining room, a family room and a spacious dining kitchen which leads through into a large pantry. The kitchen is fitted with a range of bespoke units, some with a wooden worksurface and others with marble tops. Also on this floor is a rear entrance hall and downstairs lavatory.

On the first-floor, reached by a grand staircase, there is a large landing leading to four large bedrooms, a bathroom and a Jack and Jill en-suite to the master bedroom.

Stairs lead up to the second-floor which has a further three bedrooms and a bathroom, along with a recently remodelled studio/games room with a mezzanine and loft area above.

Clair said: “The weaver’s cottage at the side could be adapted to offer independent living for a relative or could be converted into a holiday let. It has several possible uses.’’

Outside, the house has an orchard, walled vegetable garden, lawn, mature trees, a paddock, courtyard and stables.

The house is reached by a sweeping driveway through carved stone gateposts.
