Teacher Shane Martin is used to raised eyebrows and questions when he gives anyone his address.

For although his historical three-storey weaver’s cottage is in the heart of the pretty Holme Valley village of Scholes, his actual address is Paris.

For many years the Paris area of Scholes has been a talking point, but Shane says the actual Paris address only applies to a small group of cottages and the word 'Paris' is pronounced slightly differently to the French capital.

The association with the French capital city is actually much more appealing than the original address - which he understands was Pig Field.

Shane’s quirky and unique Grade 11 listed weaver’s cottage is believed to be around 300 years old. It is now up for sale as Shane and his partner, teacher Kate Emptage, are looking for a new home together.

He said: "We would like to stay in this area as it is ideal for us with lovely walks on the doorstep and easy access into both Holmfirth and New Mill.

"The local school is very good and Holmfirth High School is close by. I have been told that originally animals were kept on the ground floor of this cottage with both living and weaving areas on the top floors.

"It is a  cottage full of character, which backs onto farmland, has garden at the front, garden and outbuildings across the road, and was obviously used for home weaving at some stage in its history."

Walk into the ground-floor via an entrance vestibule and you’ll find a dining kitchen which Shane has renovated himself with free standing units, an original Belfast sink and a range cooker.

One of the features of this room is the original period range, which Shane has kept for decoration only and it’s always a talking point with visitors.

Original stone stairs lead up to the first-floor which has two double bedrooms and the house bathroom, which has been recently renovated but  includes an original cast iron bath.

Original features can be seen throughout with mullioned windows, exposed floorboards and cast iron radiators.

On the top floor of the house is the main lounge area, which has rural views from both sides. Built into the attic space, this room features exposed beams and deep window sills.

Shane, who teaches at a school in Barnsley, said renovating the house has been a real labour of love. He has kept all the main features of the house and lovingly restored radiators and floorboards.

He said: “During the renovation work I found quite a lot of features which had been covered up and hopefully I’ve managed to bring them all back to life.

"It’s often the case where one home owner covers up features and the next one finds and opens them up again. If you’re looking for a house with character and a unique charm, then this could be the home for you.

"You could even tell people that you live in Paris!"
