The town of Holmfirth is well known for its rooftop views, steep hillsides, narrow lanes and quirky properties.

One such home is this week’s Our House, which sits in the town’s Station Road, just a few minutes from the centre of Holmfirth and its many amenities.

Denis and Pauline Atkinson have lived in the three-bedroom double-fronted end-terrace for 26 years, but are now retired and are looking to downsize to a bungalow, probably still in the Holme Valley area.

This property, which dates back to about 1900, is full of charm with lots of original features such as wooden beams , exposed stone and brickwork and a feature fireplace.

One of the main assets is the rear garden, which looks out over the rooftops of Holmfirth. The garden has great potential and was originally fully terraced.

This house is much bigger inside than what it first appears from the outside. Walk in through the entrance hallway and you’ll find a large dining hall, which easily accommodates the couple’s large table that can seat 10. The original stone staircase goes out of this room and the dining hall has a fireplace with log burner, beams, exposed brickwork and stone alcove.

This room has a carpeted area in the centre for the dining table, along with a polished wooden floor.

French doors on the left lead to the cosy lounge area and to the right is the breakfast kitchen, which has been updated in recent years with cream country-style units and a polished wooden floor.

The lounge has a small window to the rear, which Denis says is situated above an old stone slab, making him think the area of the house was formerly the old keeping-pantry area.

“When we first moved in here, it was always cold in the lounge and we discovered a hole in the wall covered with a mesh, like you could find in old pantries. The first job then was to make this into a proper window. We think our kitchen was originally the old wash kitchen for these properties because of its size and position.’’

Upstairs the house has three bedrooms, one of which is currently set up as an office, and the house bathroom with separate shower. The upstairs is accessed by a stone staircase, which turns halfway up and has a rope handrail. Because of its elevation, the back garden is accessed by a door at the end of the landing.

Pauline said: “Our children grew up here and it was a lovely family home, close to local schools and ideal for walking into Holmfirth for shopping. This row of houses was originally five properties but two were knocked into one more recently.

“We have a big garden to the rear which a new owner could restore to its former glory and permit parking to the front, which is always a bonus in Holmfirth, with parking at a premium in the narrow lanes and outside the old cottages.’’
