What a difference a few decades can make!

This week’s Our House was originally three cottages which were condemned in the 1970s. Years later it is a stunning contemporary property on the outskirts of Denby Dale which has been extended and brought bang up to date by the current owners Tim and Marie Maule.

Marie said: “During our time here we have done a lot of work, including adding a large garden room and also a guest suite over the double garage. Originally this house was three farm cottages, which were obviously in a very bad state. Nothing had been done to the property for years so we took on the job of a new roof, electrics, plumbing, everything really.

“The cottages originally belonged to Stubbin Farm further along the lane and were used for weaving. We understand the property is about 300 years old.’’

Now the couple are planning to relocate to the German city of Berlin due to Tim’s job in the retail sector.

It’s a move tinged with sadness as the couple have put their hearts and souls into renovating this fabulous home and garden to a very high standard.

Marie said: “We are really looking forward to our new life in Berlin. We intend to rent a property for a few months while we look round at the city’s property market to see what’s available. We will look for a new house project in Berlin.’’

Stone End Cottage is situated at Hollin Edge, a 10-minute walk away from the shops and other amenities of Denby Dale.

Situated down a lane which leads to a private driveway, Stone End Cottage sits in its own little valley and has a stream running through the large garden which Marie designed and landscaped with flower beds, borders, shrubs and several thousand daffodils in the spring.

Today the house is a magnificent property standing in around one and a half acres of land. Downstairs the shape of the original cottages can still be seen with one being the kitchen and the other two a dining room and a lounge.

The large kitchen has walnut units, a Travertine tiled floor, a double Belfast sink, an Aga and central island.

More recently Tim and Marie have extended at one end of the property to create the garden room, a large utility room and downstairs cloakroom. The garden room overlooks the extensive garden and patio seating area and is a delightful space to enjoy all year round.

Upstairs the property has four bedrooms, one of which is currently set up as an office.

The large master bedroom is light and airy with double aspect windows and impressive original beams. This also has a contemporary en-suite with shower.

Two further double bedrooms complete the first floor, along with the contemporary house bathroom.

One of the most impressive aspects of this property is the guest annexe which is a versatile space which could be kept for guests or changed into an office or granny annexe/teenage suite. This is situated over the garage and accessed by a separate door with steps to the first floor.

Stone End Cottage is a magnificent property which is a perfect family home and great party house. Although on the edge of Denby Dale, it is within easy reach of this popular village and all its amenities.

The property is being marketed by Simon Blyth estate agents 01484 603399.
