CULTURE vultures should look to Lisbon or Copenhagen for the best-value museums and galleries, a survey showed today.

Prices for cultural events in the two cities are almost two thirds cheaper than in New York and Barcelona, a survey by Post Office Travel Money revealed.

UK tourists in search of heritage attractions will also get value for money by visiting Istanbul, as well as Warsaw in Poland and Bruges in Belgium.

Bargain hunters will also find large numbers of free cultural attractions in Berlin, Budapest, London and Dublin.

In a separate survey, Post Office Travel Money said Prague was the cheapest city overall for UK holidaymakers to take a bargain break this spring.

Prices in Prague are 38% down on 2009 levels.

The 11 typical items bought on holiday – including drinks, meals, round-city travel and accommodation – cost £106.17.

This is almost two thirds less than New York – the most expensive of the 15 cities surveyed – where the same 11 items would set tourists back £307.96.

The 11 items cost £174.36 in Dublin and £218.20 in London.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: “It will pay UK holidaymakers planning a city break this spring to do their homework.

“Visiting galleries, museums and heritage sites is a staple ingredient of a city break and our research shows that culture lovers can get a great deal more for their money in some cities than in others.”
