PRINCESS Anne arrives at Huddersfield Town Hall in 1973 to open the new Huddersfield Sports Centre which is now due to be demolished to make way for a Tesco superstore and a new sports centre will be built at Springwood.

In the background on Ramsden Street you can see Whitfield's furnishing store.

In 1975 Barclays Bank applied for permission to share the building with the store but the council turned the idea down at the time saying the area was allocated primarily to shopping and the bank would be detrimental to the street.

For many years Ramsden Street was the centre of Huddersfield's municipal and cultural activities being the home of the Theatre Royal, Ramsden Street Baths, Ramsden Street Congregational Chapel, the Philosophical Hall and several council departments.
