THEY'RE OFF. Competitors in the final races of the Holme Valley Junior Schools' Cross Country League series. The league is a series of three races, with winners decided on overall times. More than 130 girls and boys entered the final races organised by Holmfrith Harriers and run over a 2,000 metre course at Sands, Holmfirth. Girst girl overall was Megan Hughes (Holmfirth) with Samantha Leader (Honley) second, Samantha Mulligan (Netherthong) third, Samantha Edmond (Netherthong) fourth, Lindsay Hill (Holmfirth) fifth and Kate Ellis (Wooldale) sixth. Overall team winners were Holmfirth. In the boys' section, overall winner was Ian Davies (Wooldale) with Daniel Sulivan (Netherthong) second, Mathew Ransby (Wooldale) third, Steven Asquith (Honley) fourth, Richard Newnham (South Crosland) fifth and Edward Dalton (Hade Edge) sixth. Almondbury High School picked up a second award for their safe journey to school project. Just week's after receiving the Examiner StopPress award, a class of 11 and 12-year-o0lds at the schol scooped £1,000 in the regional heats of the Safe Journey to School competition. Their project went through to the national finals, where it was highly prized by judges. About 100 schools entered from West Yorkshire alone, Safe Journey to School was sponsored by Autoglass, in conjunction with the Department of Transport. ONCE upon a time, first years from Moor End High School wrote their own children's stories. The 11 and 12-year-olds had written, designed and illustrated books for seven year olds. They conducted a questionnaire among youngsters at Crosland Moor Junior School where they read out the finished stories. They then made about 20 books - including fairy stories and make-believe characters - which were kept at the school.
