LIBRARIES could close early to save money.
Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan made the suggestion as a way to cut costs.
The council is in the middle of a consultation on a controversial plan to withdraw paid staff from libraries in Lepton, Slaithwaite, Golcar, Honley, Denby Dale, Kirkheaton and Shepley. Officials hope that volunteers will take over the centres.
Clr Khan said: “In order to deliver a sustainable library service across the whole of Kirklees – and against a backdrop of ongoing reduction in budgets facing the whole council – I am asking officers to work with local people to establish how we can continue to meet local needs. This is not just in relation to the seven village libraries, but in relation to all libraries. I expect a variety of different options to be explored which might include reviewing opening times or introducing automated lending.
“We will continue to discuss with local people the use of volunteers. There has been public speculation that there are plans to close libraries. This is not true,” Clr Khan added.
