IT’S not the kind of place you would expect to find a nutritious meal.

But a Colne Valley chippy has become the first in Kirklees to win a Healthy Choice Gold Award.

Linthwaite woman Binnie Joshi Barr, 31, opened the Batter Sea Fish Bar four months ago with her husband Luke Barr, 33, and her brother Vishal Joshi, 25, of Lockwood.

“We fry the fish and chips in a red palm fruit oil which has no cholesterol, is virtually trans-fat free and contains anti-oxidants, said Binnie.

“We have weekly specials that are made using herbs from the garden. We make our own chicken nuggets with 100% chicken breast and we also offer poached fish, vegetarian hot dog sausages and healthier versions of beans, mayo and ketchup.

“So many people are health conscious that we thought we would try this.

“We opened in June in what used to be the Linfit Steps chippy on Manchester Road and it’s going well so far.

“We’re the first chippy in Huddersfield to win a Kirklees Healthy Choice Gold Award.

“We’re very proud to have won it. When we tell people they don’t believe it because chippies aren’t seen as healthy places.”
