PUPILS at a Clayton West school have gone back in time.

Kaye’s First and Nursery School is celebrating its 150 anniversary this year and children created their very own museum.

Head teacher Helen Parker and staff welcomed around 400 members of the community into the museum to see the children’s hard work.

Helen said: “We had a whole week of celebrations to mark 150 years of the school which started with the children researching the history of Kaye’s First and Nursery School.

“They were able to look at photographs and log books from 1852. It was a great way for them to learn about the history of the school.”

The school also had a Victorian Day, with staff and pupils dressed in clothing of the period.

A cake, made by parent Rachel Nunns, was donated which is a replica of how the school looked back in 1852, with a few modern day features to mix the old and the new.

And children also helped unearth a time capsule from 1981, which featured the writing of the school’s class 3 children, some who are now parents with children at the school, comic books, a copy of the Examiner and coins and sweet wrappers.

The school then buried their own 2012 time capsule for future generations to discover.

Kaye’s First and Nursery School was built by Mr John Kaye and members of the Kaye family continue to visit the school on a monthly basis, including three generations who visited the museum.

Helen Parker added: “I would like to thank the Kaye family, the parents, staff and the pupils and the community who helped make this even so worthwhile.”

And Kaye’s Museum will remain open in the school hall so if other members of the school would like to visit, call the school office on 01484 222918 to arrange a visit.
