Swimming baths closed after flooding
THEY’RE used to handling large volumes of water – but one of the unfortunate victims of local flooding was a community swimming baths.
Bosses of Scissett Swimming Baths arrived on Sunday morning to find their plant room under more than a foot of flood water.
Vital pumps that circulate water for the pool and boilers that power the showers were damaged, forcing pool chiefs to close it down.
Yesterday afternoon the pool was still closed and general manager, Natalie Bates, said it was likely to be closed for most of today – possibly opening in the evening.
The gym and dry classes are operating normally but the showers are still not working.
Natalie said: “When we opened up at 7.30 in the morning there was more than a foot of water in there, it was coming over the top of our wellies.
“We’re not sure where it came from, in the past it’s come up through the floor from the beck, but on previous occasions the car park was flooded and this time it wasn’t.”
Natalie said they had a water pump on site permanently due to previous incidents but unfortunately because it had happened overnight they hadn’t been able to spring into action in time.
She added: “It’s been all hands on deck, we’ve had extra help from other leisure centres, people wading in their wellies to pump out water and clearing up the mess.
“We’ve had to cancel some classes and we’ve been ringing around and keeping the community updated through social media.
“If anyone is planning to come down today I suggest they ring before they set off.”
