YOUNGSTERS and teachers have been left devastated after a special memorial building was damaged by yobs.

Vandals have smashed up three sheds in the orchard behind Kayes First and Nursery School at Clayton West.

The incident, thought to have happened over the Easter holidays, included significant damage to Sheila’s Shed, an outbuilding dedicated to popular volunteer Sheila Clark.

Sheila sadly passed away suddenly in 2010 and the shed was donated to the school by her widower.

Headteacher Helen Parker said Sheila had run an after school gardening club for the pupils and spent several years of her life developing the school’s orchard.

She said: “We had a big opening of Sheila’s Shed after she died so the children understand the importance of that area.

“We really believe in educating our children to look after things and care for the environment. It’s a space they really value.

“The idea of it was that it was in memory of her and sadly that’s the one that suffered the most damage.

“The children are disappointed because they love going out there.”

Police believe the incident may be linked to mindless vandalism at the base of Scissett Stage Door Company, which is adjacent to the school.

As reported earlier this month, burglars broke into the premises, formerly the Methodist Chapel, and threw several cans of paint over valuable authentic costumes.

Mrs Parker added: “As a school we’re devastated at the damage but it’s particularly bad because it was for Sheila.

“She had a big passion for the outdoors and came here on a weekly basis for about ten years.

“She developed the pond, the growing beds and the willow dome.

“And she ran the after school club for children that was very popular.

“That area was very precious to the children.”

Police believe the intruders have jumped on the roof of the shed, breaking the supports inside.

It is not yet known if the damage is repairable or if a new building will be required.

The other sheds suffered damage to their doors and a window was broken.
