More M62 misery is looming for local motorists.

Work is planned for the busy motorway between Huddersfield and Brighouse.

And it will involve full and partial closures of the carriageways and a 50mph speed limit when work gets under way in mid-September.

It is expected to last until January 2014.

News of the work will anger drivers, who were looking forward to the ending of the long-running works for the Managed Motorway scheme from Brighouse in the autumn.

The Highways Agency has confirmed it is extending its concrete barrier scheme to the section between Ainley Top at junction 24 and Brighouse at junction 25.

The Highways Agency said: “We are planning to replace the existing central reserve steel vehicle restraint system with a rigid concrete barrier over a length of 4.5 km.

“The works will take place on the central reserve of the M62 at junctions 24-25 near Huddersfield, between mid September 2013 and January 2014.

“We are undertaking this work as the present barrier is nearing the end of its life. The replacement cost is to be confirmed.”

The works will require lane closures and could, at times, see the full carriageway closed with both the eastbound and westbound carriageway affected.

The Highways Agency say during such time the hard shoulder would be used for traffic and a 50mph speed restriction will be in force.

The slip roads at both junctions will also be closed during some of the works, although exact times are unknown. Diversions will be in place.

Among the work to be done is:

The replacement of the existing central reserve steel vehicle restraint system with a concrete barrier.

Surfacing works within the central reserve for the barrier foundation.

Renewal and upgrading of the existing highway drainage system in the central reserve.

Structural works to the Badger Hill and Clough Lane under-bridges to accommodate a steel barrier.

Structural works to a gantry to accommodate the concrete barrier.

Installation of central reserve emergency crossing points and associated signage.

The Highways Agency add: “The scheme will lead to improved safety and reduce the potential for delays due to maintenance.”
