A man has been hit and killed by a train at Dewsbury train station, British Transport Police have confirmed.

It is understood a white man in his 30s was struck by an express train heading through the town's station on its way from Middlesbrough to Manchester Airport.

The incident, which happened on the line serving platform two, occurred as the train was passing through the station at 75mph at 7.05pm on Tuesday evening.

British Transport Police said the death was being treated as "non-suspicious".

Police and paramedics were on the scene for several hours.

The flyover off Wellington Road, which overlooks the scene, was closed following the death.

Services through Dewsbury were expected to be disrupted until at least 9pm, National Rail said.

Huddersfield bound services were suspended but Leeds bound services were still operating.

Replacement buses were requested.
