AN award-winning Huddersfield firm supplying glass for projects including Wembley Stadium and Heathrow Airport has invested £850,000 in new machinery to fuel further expansion.
Milnsbridge-based Specialist Glass Products has bought new machinery enabling it to manufacture toughened glass – complementing existing equipment to bend, curve and laminate glass.
The move follows the firm’s success in the recent Huddersfield Examiner Business Awards, when it won the category for small and medium-sized enterprise of the year.
Specialist Glass Products, which was formed in 2003 and has annual sales of £3.5m, makes items such as glass staircases, shopfronts and balconies for venues such as hotels, conference centres and national retail chains.
The firm was founded by brothers Andrew and Jonathan Taylor and co-director Steven Mayman.
All three worked for the UK’s largest glass manufacturer, Pilkington’s, before deciding to form their own business.
Since then, the Colne Vale Road company, has carried out prestigious projects for venues such as Wembley Stadium, Heathrow Airport, Glasgow’s Central Exchange Building and retail company John Lewis.
Specialist Glass Products said its latest investment in machinery would increase production speeds. Funding for the purchase was provided by Lloyds TSB’s business banking, commercial finance and asset finance divisions.
Andrew Taylor said: “Safety legislation is fuelling rising demand for glass which is both toughened and laminated and we’re determined to seize the opportunities presented by this trend.
“The new equipment will allow us to provide bespoke combinations of toughened and laminated glass and build on our existing competitive advantage of rapid turnaround times.”
John Brittain, business manager for Lloyds TSB Business, said: “Specialist Glass Products was established by three experienced and ambitious experts and its ongoing success has been built on the foundations of their abilities and drive.
“With this new machinery, the business has diversified to ensure it can supply the bespoke products its customers require and capitalise on its market leading position to maintain its recent rapid growth.”
