Competitive sales

RETAILER WH Smith delivered trading figures in line with forecasts today – helped by strong sales at shops based at airports and railway stations.

WH Smith said high street trading conditions were competitive over Christmas. Overall like-for-like sales fell by 2% in the 21 weeks to January 26.

A 3% drop at the high street division was partly offset by a gain of 1% for the company’s travel arm.
