Region stays resilient

THE Yorkshire economy performed well during March, outperforming the UK as a whole, a survey said today.

The latest Purchasing Managers’ Index from Royal Bank of Scotland showed employment levels among firms in the region rose at their fastest pace in more than three years while output was also strong.

However, inflationary pressures remained “persistently high” – linked to rising raw material costs, higher taxes and wages and a strong euro – threatening to put the brakes on economic activity.

New orders were weaker, partly as a result of dampened export demand.
