BRITISH Airways announced annual pre-tax profits of £883m today – but warned it faced a “challenging” year.

The profit figure – almost 45% up on the last year – also triggers a £35m bonus payout for the airline’s 42,000 staff. It is also paying its first dividend since 2001. Chief executive Willie Walsh said he would forego his bonus because of the “very disappointing” opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in March.

He said the move to Terminal 5, higher fuel costs and general economic uncertainty would make the coming year “challenging”.
