TWO Huddersfield firms and one of the town’s foremost business champions are honoured in the Queen’s Awards.
Clayton West engineering firm Melett Ltd, which makes repair kits and major parts for reconditioning turbochargers, has won an award for international trade – its second in three years.
And Golcar-based building products supplier Environmental Construction Products, trading as Green Building Store, was recognised with an award for sustainable development.
Meanwhile, Prof John Thompson, professor of entrepreneurship at Huddersfield University, is one of only three individuals in Yorkshire to be given Queen’s Awards for enterprise promotion.
Seventeen Yorkshire firms are among almost 200 companies across the UK to gain Queen’s Awards this year.
The awards are recognised as the most prestigious and coveted prizes in business.
Other Yorkshire winners of the 2009 Queen’s Awards include Leeds-based grocery and wholesale exporter Nisa International; TV set-top box manufacturer Pace plc, of Shipley; and Snugpak Ltd, a manufacturer of sleeping bags and cold weather clothing, based at Silsden.
The Queen’s Awards honour outstanding UK companies by recognising the achievements of management and employees working as a team.
Awards are held for a period of five years and winning businesses are entitled to fly the Award flag and display the emblem on their letterheads, in advertising, on their products and on commemorative items.
