Tow big contract for local company

A COMPANY in Huddersfield has completed two high-profile contracts.

Birkby-based building products firm Marshalls supplied more than 5,000sq metres of concrete paving and kerbing for Liverpool's Kings Waterfront development.

And it provided heavy-duty concrete block paving for a new aircraft parking area at Newquay Cornwall International Airport.

On Merseyside, Marshalls provided paving for footpaths and access routes to the site of the £146m Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre, which is now being built.

The massive scheme is part of a programme of improvements planned for 2008 when Liverpool becomes European Capital of Culture.

Kings Waterfront will also comprise hotels, shops, leisure developments and apartments next to the banks of the river Mersey.

The Marshalls paving was installed by contractor Birse Civil.

A spokesman for Marshalls said: "The paving will create a stylish environment to surround the new arena and convention centre.

"On completion, it will transform the space into an attractive public space that both local residents and visitors can enjoy."

On the airport deal, Marshalls recruited specialist contractor Anzac to carry out the work of laying the blocks for principal contractor Mowlem.

The group was given just 10 days to complete the work - with Anzac installing 400sq metres of block paving each day.

The new airport development was commissioned to help meet likely demand for air travel from holidaymakers to the south-west tourist resorts.

The parking area allows the airport to accommodate larger and heavier aircraft, including Boeing 737s and 767s, which will now operate from the site.

Recent Marshalls contracts have included providing paving for the pedestrian approaches to the new Wembley Stadium complex.

The company also provides concrete and stone paving and kerbing for domestic driveways, footpaths and patios.
