A Huddersfield employee joined the celebrations when discount retailer Aldi marked the graduation of its first group of apprentices to completed a three-year apprenticeship programme.

Ben Heppenstall, 20, who works in Aldi’s Milnsbridge store, received his apprenticeship certificate – after being appointed as a deputy store manager following his graduation from the scheme.

Aldi launched its stores apprenticeship scheme in 2012 and has now created more than 1,000 permanent jobs for young people interested in pursuing a management career in retail.

The scheme offers store assistant training in year one and store management training in years two and three with a salary of £5.30 per hour rising to £7.63 per hour and working towards a title of deputy manager on completion. Aldi apprentices also achieve a Retail Apprenticeship Level 3 qualification.

Aldi will be hiring at least one apprentice for each of its stores throughout Yorkshire – including ones at Milnsbridge, Aspley, Slaithwaite, Beck Road in Huddersfield and Batley – next year with applications for the scheme expected to go live in March.
