RESIDENTS are being warned that conmen may strike when a road is dug up.

Contractors working for Yorkshire Water start work next week on an upgrade of the mains in Huddersfield Road, through Holmfirth centre.

New equipment will be installed which will allow the company to manage water supply distribution from the regional control centre in Bradford.

But officials are worried that con artists may take the opportunity to knock on people's doors in the area.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: "Neither Yorkshire Water nor contractors MMB expect to need access to homes or businesses in the area.

"Residents approached by strangers claiming to represent either company are urged to ask for identification carried by genuine employees."

Temporary traffic lights will be brought into operation when the work begins on Monday.

The alterations are expected to take eight weeks to complete.

The pavement in the area will also be diverted but access will be maintained for pedestrians at all times.
