Textile firm Camira Group has received the royal seal of approval – yet again.

Finance director Nick Brown and Inge Shulz, PA to the firm’s directors, met the Queen when they attended a reception at Buckingham Palace for winners of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

It’s the fourth time Camira has received a Queen’s Award and the second time it has been honoured in the category for sustainable development.

Chief executive Steve Bullas said: “This is the pinnacle of achievement in terms of recognition for our proactive stance putting sustainable development at the very heart of our business model.

“It not only gives us a unique competitive advantage, but it’s great for our wider stakeholders and the communities in which we work and do business.”

Camira, which has sites at Meltham and Mirfield, was recognised in part for making ground-breaking fabrics from materials such as harvested nettles, hemp and flax, which are grown without using pesticides or herbicides, support biodiversity and do not involve synthetic components.

Camira also extends its environmental credentials to sourcing. Cotton is obtained directly from Pakistani mills to ensure proper social practices of suppliers while top-selling wool is sustainably-produced and traceable to identifiable farms.

Camira is among 11 Yorkshire businesses to get awards this year, the 50th anniversary of the scheme, which is backed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
