A mobile coffee venture is brewing up plans for expansion – with the help of a major name in the beverage business.

David Cooper, who set up Cooper’s Coffee with his wife Jacqui and ran the business successfully for many years before selling it in 2011, has taken a stake in a Huddersfield-based mobile coffee business – with a view to expanding its franchise model across the north and eventually nationwide.

Former barrister Jocelyn Lodge turned barista to launch Go Go Gaggia in 2011 – serving Gaggia coffee and homemade cakes from the back of a strikingly-liveried Smartcar to commuters at Slaithwaite and Marsden railway stations as well as at markets, local shows and festivals.

Since then, she has franchised the business model to four other operators in the north.

Following her success in the Business Accelerator competition, one of the judges, Prof Bob Cryan, vice-chancellor of Huddersfield University, put her in touch with David Cooper, who provided mentoring for her business.

Jocelyn has also been buying coffee from his family business, Coffee Brothers, where David is managing director.

Now David has taken a minority stake in Jocelyn’s business and the duo are embarking on plans to expand the franchise network.

The newly-named Go Go Coffee will be officially launched at a national franchising exhibition in October at the NEC in Birmingham.

A new Smartcar will also be built to be rolled out next month and a new website will be launched.

David, who continues to own The Latte Hut at Huddersfield’s King Street pedestrian precinct in addition to his role at Honley-based Coffee Brothers, said: “I have been involved in franchising coffee shops and running mobile coffee vans.

“I have injected some cash into the business with the aim of getting 20 Go go Coffee franchises up and running by the end of 2016.

“Our dream is to have 20 coffee vans operating across the north from Liverpool to Hull.”

Jocelyn developed the concept of a mobile coffee shop over a bottle of wine one evening with family members when talk turned to the lack of “quality coffee” for commuters, especially at local train stations.

As well as serving coffee to commuters, she has provided liquid refreshment to cast and crew of TV drama Remember Me – including star Michael Palin – during location filming in Slaithwaite.

Commenting on David’s arrival, she said: “I could not think of anyone better to be involved.

“The future is massively exciting. We also have our own brand of coffee - the trend is increasingly towards independent coffees.

“And attending the event at the NEC will give us a chance to showcase the business nationwide.”
