BROADCASTER BSkyB has reported a sharp increase in the number of customers taking its HD television service.

The firm’s decision in January to slash the cost of the Sky Plus HD service – which combines a personal video recorder with high definition TV – added 243,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2009. More than 1m Sky households now subscribe to the HD service.

Sky cut the price of the box to £49 and said the anticipated demand meant it would create 1,000 jobs in customer service and installation.

The update on HD came as Sky reported a 13% rise in profits for the first nine months of the company’s financial year.
