A BUILDING company boss is winning customer commendations thanks to the firm’s focus on employee training.

Managing director Chris Hopkins has transformed Ploughcroft Building Services from a typical family-run construction firm into a business determined to improve the image of the small-scale builder.

He focused his efforts on team development and investing profits into setting up a training facility to deliver NVQ qualifications in construction-related topics – and excellent customer services.

As well as training Ploughcroft’s own employees, the centre provides training for staff at other companies in West Yorkshire.

Ploughcroft, which has 25 staff, boosted turnover to £1.2m in 2007. The training centre is now contributing a fifth of the company’s profits.

Managing director Chris Hopkins said: “Our dedication and commitment to training actually means people on the courses will work for rival companies.

“We believe in looking after our employees and providing regular incentives which include pay rises every three months and away days – so long as targets have been met.

“It is a very fair, open and positive place to work and I regard myself as part of the team, not the boss.”
