FIRMS are invited to compete in the 2011 Green Business Awards.

Any business in Kirklees can enter the competition in which Kirklees Council acknowledges the actions taken by local businesses to reduce their impact on the environment.

This could mean businesses fitting sustainable equipment such as double glazing, pipe lagging, recycling and a composting system.

Or reducing the environmental impact of staff travel by promoting car sharing, cycling and public transport.

Clr Peter McBride, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “These awards recognise the hard work that companies in Kirklees are doing to reduce our impact on the environment.

“As a council we are also committed to combating climate change and protecting our local environment and we are doing this through reducing greenhouse gas emissions, raising the environmental standards of buildings and developing a network of cycleways, footpaths and open spaces.”

There are five categories with cash prizes which are: Kirklees Green Business of the Year, North Kirklees Green Business of the Year, Huddersfield Green Business of the Year, Best Waste Reduction Initiative and Best Energy Reduction Initiative.

The awards are sponsored by the Green Business Network, Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership, Batley and Dewsbury Towns’ Management and Kirklees Council.
