They're the biggest wealth creators and employers in the private sector.

Collectively, Britain’s small and medium-sized enterprises are a major cog in the UK economy – creating jobs, often providing niche products and supplying bigger businesses with the components and services they need to function.

Now the Examiner Business Awards 2013 is ready to recognise the grit, determination and resourcefulness shown by these dynamic companies.

Kirklees Stadium Development Ltd is sponsoring the category for SME of the Year, which is open to businesses employing up to 50 people.

Entrants should be able to demonstrate achievement in their marketplace with evidence of an excellent business strategy, good financial performance and potential for the future.

Gareth Davies, managing director of Kirklees Stadium Development Ltd, said: “We at KSDL are delighted to sponsor the Examiner SME of the Year Award.

“We are also proud, once again, to have the opportunity to host these prestigious awards at The John Smith’s Stadium.

“Every category winner deserves congratulating for their success.

“However, we are particularly pleased to be associated with this award, as we ourselves, with less than 50 full-time staff, are an SME.

“SMEs are the engine room of our economy and their importance cannot be overestimated. As has always been the case in the UK, their endeavour and vision will be essential to return us to sustained growth.”

A Huddersfield company providing a wide range of IT services to businesses and the education sector was the category winner in last year’s Examiner Business Awards.

Danny Williams and Judy O’Brien, of PC Specialists Ltd, stepped up to receive the trophy at the awards night staged at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The company lists many of the UK’s leading universities as well as schools and colleges nationwide among its clients. The firm also supplies equipment to small firms of all kinds – from a single computer upwards.

The firm is also expanding – with plans to move from Brockholes Business Park to purpose-built premises at St Andrew’s Road, Turnbridge.

The move is set to help PC Specialists realise its ambitions by providing more space to store stock, creating more opportunities for economies of scale, reducing production costs by increasing efficiencies and offering more opportunities for research and development as well as providing a base for further expansion into existing markets.
