YORKSHIRE building firms received £10m in grants to help them train their workers last year, a report has revealed.

But only 2,000 construction companies – 31% of those eligible for help – took advantage of the funding, it said.

Industry training body ConstructionSkills said thousands of firms were failing to take up grants for training. This year, a record £140m is available.

The increase in funds available follows talks with employers to pinpoint the greatest training needs – and where funding can be made easier to access.

The level of grant to support apprentices has been “significantly” increased to help more employers recruit and train the next generation of skilled construction workers.

This follows the Government’s announcement earlier this year that it wants more young people to continue in training and education to the age of 18.
