A HUDDERSFIELD housing scheme packed with environmental features is in line for yet another award.

The £7m Primrose Hill development is one of 19 outstanding architectural scheme across West Yorkshire to compete in the 2008 Pro Yorkshire Awards scheme run by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

In total, the awards have attracted a record 76 contenders across the Yorkshire region.

The Primrose Hill scheme turned a rundown housing estate into 79 new homes for social housing group Yorkshire Housing.

It has already won trophies in the Housing Excellence Awards and the Built Quality Awards, as well as a commendation from the RICS.

The scheme, designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects, comprises a crescent of three-storey flats on Ridge Close overlooking a private courtyard and two banks of three and four-bedroomed terraced houses on Ridge Street featuring distinctive saw-tooth roofs, paved areas and private gardens.

“Green’” measures include special panels to generate electricity, solar panels to pre-heat water in the houses, low-energy lighting and gas combination boilers for central heating.

The RICS Pro Yorkshire Awards are designed to reward developments that have made the most impact on the region in the past three years. The winners will go forward to a national competition, with the chance to progress to the international RICS Awards.

RICS northern operations director Jennifer Welch said: “We are delighted by the high quality of the entries and by the geographic spread. The judges will have a tough time assessing the schemes.”

The initial judging session takes place later this month to draw up a shortlist of schemes. The panel of judges includes RICS Yorkshire and Humber regional board winners, together with industry representatives, including chartered surveyors and lawyers.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Friday, May 23, when more than 400 people are expected to attend the gala dinner at Leeds Town Hall.

Winners will be chosen in eight categories; building conservation, sustainability, regeneration, community benefit, innovation and design, tourism and leisure, commercial and residential.

One development will be named Project of the Year and the winners of the first four categories will go through to the international RICS Awards.
