A MAJOR event in Huddersfield's business calendar takes place next week.

More than 300 guests will assemble on Wednesday for the Huddersfield Examiner Business Awards at the Galpharm Stadium.

The event will recognise some of the town's top companies and business people - and the contribution they make to the local economy.

Examiner editor Roy Wright said: "The award nominees range from small start-up companies to some of the biggest names in business.

"They are drawn from many sectors, including manufacturing, new media, haulage, construction, banking and the hospitality industry.

"Judges have sifted through hundreds of entries to draw up their shortlist for 10 award categories.

"In reaching their verdict, they weighed each up the contenders against criteria including their contribution to local communities, financial performance, employment and growth record."

The awards presentation and dinner will be hosted by BBC TV presenter Harry Gration.

The guest speaker is Dr John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, who has championed the cause of community enterprises at places such as the United Nations in New York and 10 Downing Street.

Said Mr Wright: "The awards have been set up to reward the enterprising businesses that provide the fuel for Huddersfield's thriving local economy.

"The awards night promises to be a sparkling celebration of the contribution made by Huddersfield's high-calibre companies to the wealth and well-being of the town."
