A CHARITY helping terminally and seriously ill children fulfil their dreams has been presented with £1,000 to kick-off a year of fundraising by staff at a Liversedge firm.
Mattress manufacturer Komfi has named Dreams Come True as its chosen charity for 2008.
To launch the initiative, Komfi’s managing director Phil Whittell, presented an initial donation of £1,000 to Philip Pride, fundraising manager.
The firm has also pledged to provide a number of memory foam mattresses designed specifically for children.
Dreams Come True is celebrating its 20th birthday this year – and to mark the occasion the charity aims to increase the number of youngsters it helps by 20%. At present, it fulfils a dream a day, but hopes to realise many more dreams with help from Komfi.
Mr Whittell said: “We are delighted to be launching our association with Dreams Come True and are confident that through a range of activities our staff will be fully committed to raising as many funds for the charity as possible.
“All children have dreams, so it would be fantastic if our efforts over the year are able to help turn even just one of those into reality. For all children this would be a magical moment, but for those unfortunate enough to have a debilitating condition, it will surely have a greater impact.”
Since its launch in 1988, Dreams Come True has helped more than 3,000 children by funding and organising dreams that have ranged from being able to see bananas grow on a real tree to meeting X Factor judge Simon Cowell.
Philip Pride, the charity’s fundraising manager said: “Every year, we look to bring some happiness to the lives of young people who are suffering, as well as their families, by bringing their dreams to life.
“A total of 10,000 children are diagnosed with life threatening and long-term illnesses each year so there’s a lot of work to be done and we are very grateful for the support we will receive from Komfi.”
He said: “All dream requests are shaped by a child’s imagination and are often based on popular requests such as visiting Disneyland and swimming with dolphins.Š
“However, some children just wish for something that will improve their quality of life like a specially adapted bed for sleeping more comfortably – the possibilities are endless.”
Throughout 2008 Komfi’s staff plan to raise funds through a variety of innovative methods, including running the BUPA Great North Run.
