AMBITIOUS Allison Whitmarsh is enjoying sweet success with her cake-baking business ProperMaid.

The Marsh firm evolved from a project Allison undertook during her BA hospitality management degree course at Huddersfield University.

It highlighted demand for traditional home-baked goods “with a twist”.

Allison researched and developed her business idea through the university’s Business Mine and after completing her degree launched the business in July.

Since then, she has supplied farmers’ markets, delicatessens and restaurants with creative cakes such as courgette and lime, beetroot and chocolate and cappuccino and walnut.

She received her award with stunned surprise - and a new hairdo.

“I’m so shocked. I never thought I would win, I was just so honoured to be nominated after only five months in business.

“I was up against two really excellent companies and I’m simply ecstatic.”

The category is sponsored by Business Link Yorkshire. The other nominees were Environmental Defence Systems Ltd and Lazarus Mobility.
