TRAIN operator GNER has been named the best train company in Britain.

GNER, which runs the East Coast mainline service linking West Yorkshire with London, was recognised in the first-ever British Travel Awards.

People working in the travel industry voted for their favourite rail operator via websites, publications and mailshots.

Jonathan Metcalfe, chief executive of GNER, said: "We are delighted to win this award.

"It is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of our employees, who take pride in delivering consistently high standards of customer service."

GNER achieved its best customer satisfaction rating ever in the latest independent National Passenger Survey.

The improvement follows major investment in new-look Mallard electric trains and improved technology.

GNER runs 124 weekday trains on the East Coast main line, linking London King's Cross with the East Midlands, Yorkshire, north-east England and Scotland.

It carries almost 17m passengers a year.
