A Brighouse roofing specialist has landed a major contract to work on Halifax’s historic Piece Hall.

The Grade I listed building, which dates back to 1779, is undergoing conservation and repair work – and due to its protected status, a heritage roofing expert is required.

Ploughcroft, based at St Pegs Mill, Thornhill Beck Lane, will work to restore the roof of the Piece Hall to its original glory and bring it into the 21st century in time for its scheduled reopening in spring, 2016.

More than 10,000 stone slates need checking for soundness and weatherproofing. The project will also see this historic building transformed as a three-storey extension is added to link with the nearby Square Church spire site and Square Chapel.

When work is completed, the Piece Hall will feature a heritage interpretation centre where visitors will be able to learn about the history of the building, independent shops, cafés and a landscaped courtyard area for events, concerts and festivals as well as being a place for people to relax.

Ploughcroft managing director Chris Hopkins said: “Being a Halifax-based business ourselves, we’re delighted to be working on such a well-known, historical, local landmark. We are proud to play a part in helping maintain a building that has such an interesting local history and the project was the opportunity to combine our two passions – heritage work and eco roofing.”
