DEMAND for the new iPad blazed a trail at John Lewis last week as the department store celebrated a record-breaking sales result.

The chain’s electricals and home technology lifted sales by 53% on last year. That contributed to a 20.9% rise in overall revenues on a year ago to £63.1m for the week to Saturday – a level never before seen for March trading.

Mother’s Day helped double sales of gift food.

Supermarket arm Waitrose increased sales by 12% to £108.9m as shoppers bought ingredients for Waitrose’s recipe of the week, chef Delia Smith’s roast chicken with lemon and thyme.
