A SHOPPING centre in Huddersfield has stepped up its recycling efforts following a link-up with a local firm.

Andy Wood, operations manager at the Kingsgate centre, has been working with Castle Hill-based Footprint Waste Recycling for the past 12 months to set out a comprehensive recycling programme for waste paper, plastic and cardboard.

Now the centre is reaping the benefits – having amassed more than 100 tons of cardboard and six tons of plastic for recycling.

The scheme, which encompasses stores throughout the complex, is also being extended to include plastic bottles and office paper.

Footprint Recycling was set up by two local mums, Robyn Brook and Clare Garside.

Said Robyn: “The business grew out of a conversation we had over coffee in Lindley.

“My business partner was approached by a customer asking to look at recycling. I said ‘I could handle that for you’ and by lunchtime we had got the client on board.”

Footprint provides total waste management and recycling services for all types of businesses and has clients ranging from printing firms and carpet companies to retailers.

“People soon see how much more they could recycle,” said Robyn.

“Companies are discovering that there is money in waste as well as the benefits of demonstrating to customers that they have a recycling policy.”
