A COMPANY employing disabled workers in Huddersfield has won a £1.5m contract to supply car seat covers.

Remploy Automotive Interior Trim, of the Tandem Industrial Estate at Waterloo, will provide 4m covers for European seating maker Proseat, which will supply the finished products to car firms.

Workers at Remploy will use computer-controlled cutting machinery to shape the covers.

There will also be a series of sewing operations to ensure the covers fit the seats snugly.

Proseat spokesman Leigh Ashworth said: “We selected Remploy because of their proven record in delivering consistently high-quality assemblies.

“They have demonstrated to us over many years that they have the skills to develop their business alongside ours. We see them as a key supplier.”

The Waterloo firm, which has 77 employees and annual sales exceeding £5m, supplies seat and headrest covers to several major car makers, including Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin, BMW and Honda as well as excavator manufacturer JCB.

The new contract is a major boost for the factory, which was spared the axe this year when Remploy announced a massive cost-cutting drive.

The company is the UK’s largest employer of disabled people.

In the summer it announced plans to close 43 of its 83 factories across the UK as part of efforts to cut costs and get more disabled people into mainstream jobs.

The Waterloo factory was one of the 40 to stay open.
