A MAJOR drive to raise standards among food industry businesses in Kirklees takes place next week.

The 2007 Food Excellence Event today at the National Mining Museum, near Grange Moor, will highlight best practice in the selection, sourcing, preparation and serving of food.

The programme will be packed with demonstrations, seminars and networking opportunities.

A selection of Asian food will be available to sample, including delicacies prepared using blends of herbs and spices from Batley catering and chilled foods firm Spices and Rices.

The event will look at how to improve hygiene ratings awarded to organisations in Kirklees.

Kirklees environmental health officers will bring delegates up to date with the latest food regulations, while experts from law firm Chadwick Lawrence will advise on how to motivate, recruit, train and retain key staff.

Chris Shaw, managing director of Huddersfield-based Pink Elephant PR, will help businesses to understand how to market and publicise themselves for customers.

The event will also demonstrate how companies and individuals in the industry can adopt “green” policies to help them grow.

Event organiser Charles Storr said: “We have a programme of considerable interest to the more than 4,000 organisations in Kirklees associated with the food industry, including schools, hospitals, restaurants, importers, equipment makers and service providers.”
