A SPORTS retailer with shops in Huddersfield said its profits goal was still in sight – despite facing “challenging” trading conditions.

Sports Direct International, which has Sports Direct stores at Kingsgate and Birstall Shopping Park as well as a Sports World outlet at Great Northern Retail Park, said it was confident of delivering forecast underlying earnings of £148m in the year to April 27.

However, analysts were disappointed by the company’s failure to provide additional details on sales and how it expected to achieved the earnings figure.

Sports Direct, which is majority-owned by Newcastle United chief Mike Ashley, has been criticised in the past for its poor communication with City analysts.

The group made a rocky start following its stock market debut in February last year – having initially downgraded profit forecasts – before pleasing investors in January by restoring city targets of £148m.

Sports Direct, which owns brands including Donnay, Dunlop and Kangol, has more than 460 stores UK-wide.
