THE number of people visiting the UK’s shops and shopping centres fell by 2.4% last month, according to figures from business information group Experian.

The firm’s latest Footfall Index showed that the North West, East Midlands, West Midlands and Eastern regions saw year-on-year decreases of 3.3% to 4.3%.

London, Scotland and the south-east presented a slightly better pictured with year-on-year falls of 1.5%, 2.3% and 2.9% respectively.

Analysts blamed the September fall on changeable weather, the return to school and the general economic climate – but hoped Christmas trading would provide a lift.
