ECONOMIC problems building up this year will reduce the time and money firms can devote to improving environmental performance, said a survey.

Energy supplier E.ON said 34% of companies would be taking energy action during 2008 – but four out of 10 admitted they were still not doing as much as they could for the environment and only one in eight planned to increase their energy saving efforts this year.

The poll showed that 71% of senior business leaders predict the UK is heading for recession or already in recession. Nearly half said this would reduce the time and resources they dedicate to saving energy.

But E.ON said many energy saving measures, such as turning off lights and equipment when not in use, could bring major savings – adding that a 20% saving in energy costs could have the same impact on profits as a 5% rise in sales.
