Teenager Abigail Pierre has become one of the first graduates from a new apprenticeship scheme run by optical retailer Vision Express.

The 13-month scheme accepted its first recruits in February, 2014. Vision Express was deluged by more than 3,000 applications.

Thirteen apprentice graduates – who faced competition from 40 applicants per place – were recognised in an official graduation ceremony at the company’s Nottingham head office.

They included Abigail, who has taken up a full time, permanent post as an optical assistant at the Vision Express store at New Street after qualifying with a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health (Optical Retail).

Abigail said: “Apprenticeships are a better way to learn than sitting in the classroom writing essays.

“They give you a chance to earn some money while you’re learning and I think they are an excellent kick-start to your career.”

She said: “I really want to stay with Vision Express and am considering which career path to take.

“I’m looking at a possible management role or may take the route to becoming a dispensing optician.”
