A NEW fast food shop is thriving – after winning a business start-up competition.

Huddersfield University student Matthew Postlethwaite set up wraps business Wrapik as part of his degree course.

Wrapik was one of the winners in the business start-up competition run by Kirklees Council over the summer.

The prize was to get a shop at Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market rent and service charge-free for six months, followed by three months when only the service charge is payable and a further three months when rent is charged at 50%.

Winners also received training and support as well as an initial investment grant of £500 to help pay for signs and fittings.

The aim of the initiative was to support and encourage local business, and Matthew said: “Kirklees Council has been brilliant and have helped out every step of the way.

“They helped to prepare the shop for me by installing the counter top where all the food is served from and when I opened my stall for a free taster day they helped when all the electricity cut out before I served my first customer!

Matthew said: “Since opening the shop fully on October 29 everything has gone from strength to strength. The shop is building up a great reputation for fresh and healthy fast food with many loyal customers.”

Twin brother Jeff also started his business, fast food Pasta Twists, at Queensgate Market.

Earlier this year, he won £50,000 from TV programme Be Your Own Boss for his food business, Twists Pasta Bar, which he plans to open in the town centre soon.
