Examiner Community Award: Young Personality, Courage Award, Arts Award

TEENAGER Andrew Winterbottom does not think hes done anything special.

But the 17-year-old from Oakes has dedicated years to helping people with disabilities and does not plan to stop just yet.

He won the award after judges heard how he runs three night courses and organises social events. And the Kirklees College social care student is planning to continue his kind-spirited approach into adult life.

Andrew, of Oakes said: "I'm really proud that someone would think to nominate me for an award.

"I have heard some wonderful stories here tonight and I am stunned to know that I have won" Andrew was only 11 when he started his community work, when. This was when sister Emma, now 20, introduced him to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.Over the years he has spent many running classes for disabled people from IT sessions to woodwork. Andrew, a former Salendine Nook High School pupil, is also in the process of setting up a Night Line scheme and is funding himself through a climbing course to take disabled people climbing.

Other nominees in this category were Rosie O’Hare and Kelly Wilson.
